SIP homes from Foam Laminates of Vermont can easily qualify for the Energy Star certification. In order for a SIP home to qualify, it must be tested for energy efficiency using a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index. The HERS index determines how much energy a home consumes via an objective and standardized test. The test is preformed by HERS rather through an onsite home inspection.
For more information about HERS raters in your area, please visit the Residential Services Energy Network website.
In order to achieve the Energy Star Label, a building must pass the Thermal Bypass Inspection Checklist. This checklist requires visual inspection of insulation and framing areas where air barries are sometimes missed in order to verify that thermal and air barriers are complete and continuous. However, passing the thermal bypass inspection is practically automatic when choosing Foam Laminates as your manufacturer and installer.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently waived the blower door test for homes manufactured with structural insulated panels that meet Energy Star requirements? Builders utilizing SIPs in construction projects will now find it easier to achieve an Energy Star rating with the aid of the Visual Inspection Form released by the EPA. The Visual Inspection Form replaces the blower door test and energy efficiency calculations that normally were required to meet the Energy Star Certification. Homes utilizing both roof and wall panels will now find it much easier to qualify.

The Energy Star Home program is a not for profit agency established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1982 to promote energy efficient products, reduce energy usage, and decrease carbon dioxide emissions throughout the United States. Currently, the program encompasses 40 product categories and those products recognized as being energy efficient carry the Energy Star mark. This certification has been bestowed upon many consumer electronics including dishwashers, appliances, refrigerators, and even homes manufactured with structural insulated panels.
SIP homes can qualify for the Energy Star label if they demonstrate a certain level of energy efficiency.
The Benefits of being a member include reduced utility bills, higher appraisal values, qualification for Energy Efficient Mortgages, eligibility for Tax Credits, and more comfortable living conditions.
